Welcome to Theta Commission of Kappa Alpha Order
We are an official part of the Kappa Alpha Order, a fraternity whose history stretches back to its founding at Washington College in Lexington, Virginia, in 1865. Theta’s own history dates back to October 1, 1883, when it was chartered sub rosa at The Citadel. Today we exist as a “commission” rather than a “chapter”, with a growing list of over 900 carefully selected alumni members of The Citadel community.
Our mission is to support and uphold the high values of both the Kappa Alpha Order as well as The Citadel. Those values are set forth on this website. Fraternities are not compatible with the military environment at The Citadel. For that reason, our members are all alumni, not members of the Corps of Cadets. Our Commission is neither supported by nor endorsed in any way by The Citadel. However, The Citadel has a high regard for the ethical and other values of Kappa Alpha Order, because they are the same values supported and taught by The Citadel and its Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics.
We believe we can best serve our alma mater by living up to the Kappa Alpha motto of Excelsior! in our daily lives. We embrace the values of ancient chivalry, including service to our country as well as to the less fortunate. We are also men of faith, who may be of different religions, but who acknowledge a Supreme Being greater than ourselves.
